USA Basketball's list of 20 players invited to take part in training camp has now been reduced to 13 after seven players plus one potential addition have since decommitted to taking part in August's upcoming training camp along with the FIBA World Cup challenge that awaits shortly after as part of a six-week run with Team USA.

USAB's managing director Jerry Colangelo isn't fretting despite losing four potential starters in James Harden, Bradley Beal, Anthony Davis, and most-recently Damian Lillard, who have pulled out of the invite altogether.

“We are blessed with a lot of talent, a lot of talent in the NBA,” Colangelo told Joe Vardon of The Athletic. “There is no panic. It may be more challenging, but we will be able to field a very competitive team. We’ve had players call us who want to be on our list.”

Besides the aforementioned, Colangelo and company have also had Tobias Harris, CJ McCollum, Eric Gordon and potential tentative replacement DeMar DeRozan pull out of the competition before the Aug. 5 deadline. Rookie forward Zion Williamson was also quick to turn it down after suffering a mild injury in Summer League, opting to head into the start of the 2019-20 season with no questions about his health.

Adding to those woes, the Americans have yet to play in a world-class competition since the 2016 Rio Olympics, which has made them unable to develop any sort of chemistry ahead of this process.

“The format where we played every two years was a good format for us,” Colangelo said. “Going back-to-back with two NBA seasons, yes, it’s proving to be more challenging. But what I’ve always said is, we have an initial list, and it’s fluid. I am not surprised by any of (the defections). We’re far from being complete in terms of a roster for training camp.”

Colangelo has invited another run of players, including Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, D'Angelo Russell, Aaron Gordon, and Mike Conley — yet a few of them could choose to say “thanks, but no thanks” after the influx of change in each NBA roster and the necessary adjustments that could come with it.
