After securing the services of Houston Texans linebacker Zach Cunningham again for the next four years, Bill O'Brien is hoping quarterback Deshaun Watson is next in line to get his piece of the pie. The former Clemson Tiger is about to enter the final year of his rookie contract signed back in 2017. With over a week before their opening game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Watson has yet to land an extension with the team.

Texans head coach and general manager Bill O' Brien shed light on where the contract talks with Watson are currently at:

“I think, look, obviously we feel good about where we’re at as a team,” O’Brien said, via a transcript. “We feel like we have a lot of, like I said earlier, we’ve got a lot of dependable, tough, smart guys and they get along well. They want to be here. Houston’s a great city. They want to live here and they want to represent this city. Like I’ve said all along, I don’t really want to get into specific contract talks but quite obviously we want Deshaun Watson to be here for a long time. He’s had a great training camp, he’s a great player and we’re going to work hard to get that done.”

Being one of the league's most promising young quarterbacks, Watson primed himself for a lucrative payday. He has driven the Texans' offense to greater heights and established the team as a contender in recent seasons. A 2017 PFWA All-Rookie Team selection and two-straight Pro Bowl appearances are indicative of Watson's capabilities as the Texans' main man.

Despite falling short in the 2019 NFL Playoffs, Watson is looking to run it back with the rest of the Texans in the upcoming season. Amidst the uncertainty, securing a contract extension for their star QB is definitely a priority.
