There is a certain sense of optimism surrounding the Houston Texans going into the 2018 NFL season. Not only have they added solid depth to key positions, but they are expecting to welcome back a number of their star players from injury this offseason, including quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Watson's emergence has given the Texans some security under center which is something they have not had in several years. As a result, head coach Bill O'Brien said during an appearance on NFL Live that the team is working to tailor the offense around their young quarterback.

“It’s a very big project but it’s a lot of fun. It’s fun to get in there with the offensive staff and figure out how we can do things differently than we’ve done in the past. I think you have to be willing to change in this league relative to the talent you have,” O’Brien said. “Deshaun has a unique skill set at the position and we’re looking at his skill set as well as Hopkins, Will Fuller, Lamar Miller, D'Onta Foreman, Ryan Griffin some of the other guys we have on offense and really trying to put it all together.”

Restructuring an offense is always a tall task. Fortunately, O'Brien will have some flexibility thanks to Watson's versatile skill set as both a runner and a passer.  Furthermore, Houston now has the luxury of having the entire offseason to work on their new scheme.

Although they had confidence in Watson's ability after taking him with the 12th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the expectation was that quarterback Tom Savage would start while the young gunslinger continued to develop. However, it was not long before Savage's lackluster performance gave way to Watson and the rest is history. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see if O'Brien can help the offense take another step forward next season.
