Houston Texans defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has been away from the team most of the offseason which has given others on the team like Brennan Scarlett to step up. Clowney has been trying to get a new contract, and in his absense, Scarlett has taken over as the starting end in practices.

“Brennan has been with us for a little bit and he has played multiple positions,” Texans defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel said via the Houston Chronicle. “He can do multiple things. I think he can and will function very well for us.”

Scarlett was undrafted out of Stanford but is now entering his 4th year in the league. Last season Scarlett started three of the 12 games he played in recording 18 tackles, one forced fumble, and one interception. He was put on the injured reserve with an ankle injury but is fully healthy and ready for the upcoming season.

Scarlett doesn't have all the physical traits as Clowney but has proven he is a solid player on the field, and most are impressed with how much he has improved.

“Brennan, he has improved a whole lot, especially from last year to this year,” Texans veteran outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus said. “He's embraced his role. His pass rush has been on point. His pass coverage has been on point. I'm excited to see exactly what he does this year.”

The expectation is that Clowney will be back for the start of the upcoming season, but if he isn't the Texans have a lot of confidence in Scarlett.
