The Houston Texans are set to get well-acquainted with the Green Bay Packers in the week leading up to the 2019 NFL Preseason opener. It seems quarterback Deshaun Watson has already gotten a head start on observing his counterpart in Green Bay, Aaron Rodgers.

There is plenty for Watson to take away from a quarterback like Rodgers. According to Mark Lane of the Texans Wire, he feels Rodgers' ability to extend the play is something that has stood out to him the most:

So far, Watson has identified one element of Rodgers’ game and added to his own.

“The biggest thing was really just keeping plays alive,” Watson said. “Always looking for guys, regardless if you’re scrambling outside the pocket or moving around inside the pocket, he’s always looking for an open receiver. If he can have that connection with open receivers, it’s another factor that the defense has to take care of and have to worry about, and it makes the offense a lot more dangerous.”

There is no question that Rodgers' ability to extend plays is second-to-none. His rare combination of arm talent and mobility allows him to create something out of nothing. It is clear that Watson is hoping to add this aspect of Rodgers' game to his own repertoire.

Although the Packers' star is always a threat to make something happen, there is still a delicate balance to be attained from doing this. Green Bay found themselves relying on Rodgers' playmaking ability a bit too much in recent years and are now hoping to take a more balanced approach. It is safe to assume that Watson will experience some of his own growing pains when it comes to trying to extend plays moving forward.
