The Houston Texans were able to secure quarterback Deshaun Watson for the long haul with a four-year contract extension that includes $111 million in guarantees. It appears the lucrative payday is not the only perk included in his contract.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, Watson also has a no-trade in his new deal:

Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson's blockbuster $156 million contract extension includes a no-trade clause, according to a league source with knowledge of the deal.

There had been plenty of speculation regarding whether or not a new deal would get done prior to the start of the 2020 NFL season. While the restrictions placed in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic offered up its own set of challenges for teams trying to negotiate long-term contracts, there were clearly some demands to be met on Watson's side.

Although Watson was adamant about staying focused on his preparation and not getting too caught up in the contract situation, he can take solace in the fact that he was able to gain some long-term security. He can now move forward with helping the Texans maintain their high expectations without any worries of potentially being moved without his permission through the 2025 season.

There is good reason to be confident that Watson will be under center in Houston even after this contract plays out given his status as a two-time Pro Bowler and one of the elite quarterbacks in the NFL. It is safe to assume that the no-trade clause was simply a formality for him to have some peace of mind.
