The Houston Texans worked out free-agent cornerback EJ Gaines on Tuesday, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. He is now fully healthy and is looking to sign with an NFL team to close the 2019 season.

The Texans have struggled with underachieving results from their secondary and they have been trying to find external options to upgrade their roster in that area. This has been the result of injuries to starting cornerbacks Jonathan Joseph and Bradley Roby.

They had recently traded for Gareon Conley from the Oakland Raiders in exchange for a third-round pick, but are still seeking further upgrades. They are in need of solidifying their depth chart at the cornerback spot since injuries have been an ongoing issue.

Last season, Gaines appeared in six games for the Cleveland Browns and started in two of those performances. He was later placed on the injured reserve list after suffering a concussion. He was a fourth-round pick by the Los Angeles Rams (St. Louis at the time) and has recorded 198 tackles, four interceptions, four forced fumbles, and 33 pass breakups in 43 games during his career.

The most games that he played in a season was 15 as a rookie but then played in 11 games for consecutive seasons after that. He was waived by the Buffalo Bills back in August as a result of a groin injury that led to an injury settlement being reached between the two sides.
