After months of talk surrounding a potential deal, the Houston Texans are reportedly close to a contract extension for star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, per Yahoo Sports’ Jordan Schultz.

Per source, Texans and Jadeveon Clowney are “close” to a contract extension. @AlbertBreer first reported “a lot of progress” being made. I’m told in the neighborhood of 18-18.5 guaranteed per year, over 5. Little doubt it gets done – by camp at the latest.

Clowney, 25, is heading into the final year of his rookie contract after he was drafted No. 1 overall by the Texans in the 2014 draft. After suffering some injury setbacks in his first two years, Clowney has finally shown the talent which made him the consensus top pick.

He’s totaled 15.5 sacks, 111 total tackles, and three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries in the last two years and earned himself back-to-back Pro Bowl selections.

With J.J. Watt missing a big chunk of the last two years due to injuries and unlikely to be the absolutely dominant defensive force he once was, the Texans need to lock Clowney up and have him become the face of the Houston defense. He’s clearly shown over the last couple of years that he’s capable of stepping up to that challenge.

Based on recent reports, it feels like just a matter of time before the two sides come to an agreement. Houston appears prepared to hand over a massive contract, and if Clowney continues to play like he has for the past two seasons, he will likely be worth all the money he’s about to be paid.
