The Houston Texans already have their franchise quarterback in Deshaun Watson. Prior to going down with a torn ACL last season, Watson lived up to the hype in the seven games he played during his rookie year.

With the starting spot all locked up, the Texans are now looking at the possibility of picking up Watson's backup. They reportedly worked out former Heisman-winning QB Lamar Jackson on Wednesday, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

This is interesting: The Texans hosted a private workout yesterday for #Louisville QB Lamar Jackson, source said. The team wants to be prepared for any and all scenarios on draft week… even the unlikely such as Jackson being available for them.

While the Texans don’t pick until the third round (No. 68 overall), in part due to the trade they made to move up and get Watson last season, it’s still within the realm of possibility that Jackson is still on the board by that time.

There will likely be some who will question the Texans’ decision to even consider drafting a backup QB with their highest pick in the draft over picking up a more pressing need. However, there is some logic to it.

For one, Watson does now have two torn ACLs and isn’t a complete guarantee to stay on the field. And if he does go down again, the Texans don’t have a backup dual-threat QB who can replicate his style. Jackson obviously has a lot of experience (and success) running a similar spread offense in college, so the Texans can simply plug him in without having to change their system too much.

Of course, there’s no actual guarantee Jackson will still be available for the Texans in the third round. But if he is, at least they have done their homework on Jackson and can weigh their possible options accordingly.
