The NFL has had to take unprecedented action in order to prepare for the 2020 season amid the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Fortunately, the restrictions of the virtual offseason program have not been an issue for quarterback Deshaun Watson of the Houston Texans.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, offensive coordinator Tim Kelly feels Watson has made tremendous progress with the Texans' offense:

“I think Deshaun’s excited,” Kelly said. “I don’t want to speak for him, but with the communication that we’ve had these however many days throughout this virtual offseason, he’s come in with a great mindset, coming in, trying to get better at some areas and really take grasp of the offense. He’s doing a great job as far as that’s concerned.

Although the departure of wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins has left a rather notable void on offense, Kelly is optimistic that Watson still has more than enough pieces with the Texans.

“Then, yeah, obviously there’s versatility that goes along with playing that wide receiver position, being able to play inside and outside and do some different things and have a diversified route tree. It’s all things that are going to help us basically take the next step here as an offense.”

The Texans did what they what they could to try and replace Hopkins by relying on a versatile committee of established veterans. The receiving corps will now be headlined by Brandin Cooks and Randall Cobb as the newest weapons for Hopkins. Meanwhile, it seems they will give running back David Johnson every opportunity to alleviate the criticism of the trade by taking on an integral role in the backfield.

Of course, the prospect of Cooks and Cobb serving as viable, alternative options to Hopkins many seem far-fetched. The fate of this group could very well rest on whether Texans wide receiver Will Fuller can stay healthy for the long haul.

Regardless, Kelly still has good reason to be confident with a player of Watson's caliber under center for the Texans.
