The Houston Texans made a splash during the 2018 NFL season with the acquisition of wide receiver Demaryius Thomas. Unfortunately, it appears his time with the team has already come to an end.

Thomas had a rough time finding his footing this season. The Texans officially announced his release, via Twitter

The Texans have released WR Demaryius Thomas.

Houston gave up a fourth-round pick in exchange for Thomas midway through the year. Although their move was certainly understandable at the time, it is safe to say that they did not get much bang for their buck.

The Texans wide receiving corps had been terribly thin at the time of the trade. Houston was hoping Thomas could take wide receiver Will Fuller's complementary role across wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. He finished the 2018 campaign with just 23 receptions for 275 yards and two touchdowns in seven games before blowing out his Achilles in Week 16.

The move certainly makes sense for Houston. Thomas was due to make $14 million in the final year of his contract. His release should provide the front office with some valuable cap relief this offseason.

Unfortunately, Thomas' release raises further speculation about his future in the NFL. It is no secret that he has been in the final phase of his career. He even admittedly considered retirement prior to the 2018 season. The road to recovery off such a severe injury will undoubtedly be difficult for the 31-year-old. At this point, it is not too far-fetched to assume that the 2018 campaign may have very well been the last one for Thomas.
