Kenny Stills might have known had played his last game for the Houston Texans when he left a Week 10 loss to the Cleveland Browns due to injury.

Stills missed Houston's loss to the Detroit Lions on Thursday with a quad issue. Just one day later, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN reports the Texans released him, though it was apparently a “mutual parting.”

The Texans acquired Stills from the Miami Dolphins as part of the deal that also landed them star left tackle Laremy Tunsil.

While Tunsil–who signed a record-breaking extension with the team–has become a key cog in the organization, Stills was never quite able to get a foothold.

The 28-year-old played in 13 games for the Texans in 2019, posting somewhat respectable numbers with 40 catches for 561 yards and four scores. But Stills' role has diminished that much further this season.

Stills managed just 11 catches for 144 yards in his first ten games. He played in 55 percent of the team's offensive snaps in 2019 but—as of Friday–that number had fallen to just 25 percent.

It was always going to be tough for Stills to find an adequate role considering the Texans added both Randall Cobb and Brandin Cooks in the offseason. Not to mention, Houston often runs sets with multiple tight ends.

In any case, Stills will be looking to begin the next phase of his NFL career. He displayed bursts of talent and home-run ability with the New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins early in his career. It will be interesting to see whether a contender with receiving needs takes a chance on Stills.
