K.J. Malone, the son of former NBA player Karl Malone, has decided to retire from the NFL before his career could even get started.

According to Sarah Barshop of ESPN, the Houston Texans have placed Malone on the reserve/retired list on Monday.

After going undrafted out of LSU, Malone signed a contract with the Texans and attended their rookie minicamp. He dealt with knee injuries during his time at LSU, but after he signed with the Texans he said the knee injuries were behind him.

Malone was training with Hall of Fame of offensive lineman Bryce Matthews and veteran trainer Danny Arnold in hopes of getting his knee completely ready while trying to climb up the Texans depth chart.

On Monday, he took to Twitter and said he was retiring because of the knee injuries.

“Thank you to the Houston Texans for an incredible opportunity. Due to my previous knee injury during my career at LSU I have not able to recover and decided it was best to step away from the game of football and take time to heal. With that being said, I will further my career in Law Enforcement. Thank you everyone for all your support.”

Coming into college, Malone was a four-star offensive tackle recruit and he started two years with the Tigers. He was a longshot to make the roster, but it's still unfortunate to see a career ended because of an injury and for this guy to not even get a real shot to live out his career dream.
