The Houston Texans are hoping to take a tremendous step forward toward being a legitimate contender in the NFL this upcoming season after yet another season ending with missing the playoffs. A major part of that puzzle offensively is once again expected to be running back Lamar Miller as the primary option in the backfield.

There has been some question as to what he will role will be next season due to his notable decline in production last year. According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, head coach Bill O'Brien has voiced that he believes that Miller is a “three-down back” in the NFL.

“He’s what we call a three-down back,” Texans coach Bill O'Brien said. ” We feel like he can play on first, second and third down. He’s a very good pass protector, blitz pickup guy. He’s really good at that.

“Very good runner, good receiver out of the backfield, very smart player. He and Deshaun have a real good chemistry back there in the backfield, and he’s a good guy to have back there.”

Since inking the four-year, $26 million deal with the Texans back in March 2016, Miller has been a productive factor for the team as their clear-cut starter. This includes him notching his second career 1,000 rushing yard campaign over that span, but he did see a slight drop in his numbers last year.

However, Miller has a chance to get back on track, especially working behind quarterback Deshaun Watson, which could open up many more opportunities for him to be a more effective weapon in the offense for the Texans this upcoming season. It could help him get back on track to playing up to the worth of his deal where he is one of the most reliable running backs in the league due to his dual-threat ability to impact the game.

With the support of the coaching staff, it should see plenty of opportunities ahead for him to prove he is a bonafide three-down running back.
