Houston Texans wide receiver Floyd Allen is trying to have an impressive showing on Thursday so he can make the roster or practice squad, but no matter what happens, he is in a better spot right now than he was a couple of years ago. Just three years ago Allen was homeless in California and living in a car just trying to make ends meet.

Allen earned a scholarship last summer for his last season at Ole Miss and, although he didn't catch a lot of passes, he was a special teams standout; and if he is going to earn a roster spot with the Texans, it will be because of that.

Allen received a tryout with the Texans during rookie minicamp and did enough to earn a contract. Allen said no matter what happens the last few months has been a blessing.

Via Aaron Wilson in the Houston Chronicle:

“It's a blessing,” Allen said. “I've been through a lot of trials and tribulations to make it to the NFL. Now that I'm here, I'm just trying to take advantage of this opportunity, put good things on film and leave it in God's hands.'

So far during the preseason, Allen has one reception for 16 yards, but with most of the starters sitting the fourth preseason game, he should get a lot of playing time on Thursday night. Allen said he feels like he has proven a lot, and has gotten better as time has gone on.

“Yeah, it's exciting,” Allen said. “I feel like I've had really good preparation, learning the defenses I'm going against and having fun.”
