It has been an eventful offseason for Houston Texans safety Tyrann Mathieu. Fortunately, it appears things have gotten off on the right foot with his new team.
Mathieu has noted that one of the main reasons he signed with Houston was their plan to keep him at his primary position. According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, he has already felt the effects of only having to focus on playing safety:
“Yeah, it definitely helps me slow things down,” Mathieu said. “Just focusing on one position, trying to be the best at that, rather than just being good at everything. So, I think it’s important for me to just embrace it like I have been and just trying to continue to grow as a safety.”
Although he is happy with his new role, Mathieu added that he still plans of flexing his versatility in the secondary.
“Well, I take great pride in really every aspect of my game,” Mathieu said. “Then, the physicality, obviously I have this little man syndrome so, being physical is part of my nature. It’s definitely a part of how I play.”
His comments should hardly come as any surprise. His dynamic skill set is part of what makes him one of the most exciting defensive players in the NFL. Unfortunately, it seemed to be taking a toll on him during his time with the Arizona Cardinals.
It goes without saying that Mathieu is the quintessential jack-of-all-trades on defense. He registered 78 tackles, two interceptions, and a sack in the 2017 campaign. Perhaps even more impressive is that he managed to play in all 16 games for the first time in his five-year career. Needless to say, Houston will need that same durability from all their star players after coming off an injury-riddled season.
