The final head-coaching vacancy in the NFL will soon be filled, and it looks like the Houston Texans are leaning towards hiring Baltimore Ravens assistant coach and wide receivers coach David Culley to become the team’s next coach.

While Culley was considered as one of the favorites to fill the position, there are reports that the 65-year-old will serve in the role only for a few years and will eventually be replaced by quarterback Josh McCown, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

McCown is already reported to be in discussions to become a part of Culley’s coaching staff as the Texans fill out his staff and prepare for his official hire. Per the reports, the 41-year-old signal-caller will likely be the team’s quarterbacks coach and could transition to be the team’s offensive coordinator before becoming head coach and replacing Culley in a couple of years.

The report states that the plan for McCown to be the team’s eventual head coach is designed by Texans VP of Football Operations Jack Easterby. It was Easterby who wanted to hire Nick Caserio as Houston’s general manager—and also reportedly wants McCown to be the team’s head coach.

Despite an impending coaching hire, a lot of uncertainty remains in the Texans’ camp, especially after quarterback Deshaun Watson officially requested a trade from the team. While it seems inevitable that Watson will find himself on a different team by the time next season starts, it's interesting to see how this potential development could affect the Texans and their standing in the AFC South.
