A new report suggests that the Houston Texans are set to promote tight end coach Tim Kelly to their offensive coordinator position.

This upward move will leave the tight end position open, and Will Lawing is set to take over from Kelly.

Fans of the Houston Texans have, reportedly, been begging head coach Bill O'Brien to hire an offensive coordinator for the longest time. Presumably, too, this new hire means that O'Brien won't have to call plays next season (even though, technically, he could still do just that, while making Tim Kelly an OC “in title only”).

But it does seem like a good idea, on the surface, to put Kelly in charge of each of Houston's offensive snaps.

Fans of the Houston Texans will recall that, when Bill O'Brien came on board with the team in 2014, he made the controversial decision not to hire an offensive coordinator. The following year, realizing the foolhardiness of the decision, O'Brien decided to hire George Godsey for the position. Later, Godsey and the team “mutually agreed” to part ways.

In the 2017 and 2018 seasons, O'Brien served as the de facto offensive coordinator for the team. However, he wasn't always the best at his job (though this isn't to say he was the worst, either).

Prior to coming on board with the Texans, Tim Kelly served as an assistant offensive line coach and offensive quality control coach in Houston before becoming the tight ends coach in 2017. He also served under Bill O'Brien when both were at Penn State.
