As far as the best teams in franchise history go, it has been all downhill for the Tennessee Titans since the organization's inaugural season back in 1999. Although there have been both peaks and valleys for the current AFC South franchise, including more than a few significant playoff runs and impressive single-season efforts, the Titans have still never won a Super Bowl while most notably reaching Super Bowl XXXIV as a result of that 1999 campaign.

Coming quite literally within one yard of the team's first-ever Super Bowl title, the Titans' last AFC Championship was memorable for all the wrong reasons. However, the 1999 Titans remain one of the best teams of all time in terms of all-around talent, even with Tennessee ultimately unable to overcome the now heralded St. Louis Rams. Even though the 1999 Titans are often forgotten and left out of conversations surrounding the best teams ever, the team's fan base certainly hasn't forgotten about this incredible campaign.

Led by a slew of well-known and high-level players on both sides of the line of scrimmage, quarterback Steve McNair, running back Eddie George, offensive lineman Bruce Matthews, tight end Frank Wycheck and pass rusher Jevon Kearse allowed Tennessee to string together an impressive season from start to finish.

After (a meaningless) 1-3 preseason slate, the 13-3 Titans somehow didn't win the AFC Central division despite quickly becoming one of the best teams in the entire NFL. Nonetheless, the Titans would still reach the postseason en route to starting things off with the now-infamous “Music City Miracle” against the Buffalo Bills. With the Titans doing the impossible against the Bills, Tennessee then defeated the Indianapolis Colts before being matched up against the rival Jacksonville Jaguars in the 1999 AFC Championship Game. The Jaguars would lose just three games that season, all of which came at the hands of the surging Titans, including the AFC Championship Game — a contest Tennessee went on to win in impressive fashion by the score of 33-14.

Producing three consecutive wins to reach the Super Bowl against the aforementioned Rams, the last two of which came on the road, the Titans were primed to jumpstart the new-look franchise in a big way. Unfortunately for the Titans and the team's fan base alike, the Rams would ultimately prove victorious by the score of 23-16. Adding to the pain that is still endured today, the Rams quite literally won the game by one yard as Titans wide receiver Kevin Dyson was unable to reach the end zone to potentially tie or win the game as the final seconds of regulation ran out.

Even with the Titans being unable to win a Super Bowl back in 1999, there is no doubt that this absolutely stacked squad still serves as the best team in franchise history.

With the Titans currently gearing up to enter the 2020 campaign fresh off of an appearance in the AFC Championship Game, Tennessee was yet again within reach of a possible Super Bowl title just last season. Even though the Titans came up short in 2019, things are still looking up for Tennessee as this team should enter the upcoming campaign as the favorites to win the AFC South division.
