In a matter of weeks, the Indianapolis Colts have become extremely thin at the wide receiver position. As a result, the Colts must get Eric Ebron more involved in the offense.

Over the past week, Indianapolis has witnessed both T.Y. Hilton and rookie Parris Campbell sustain injuries that will keep them out for an extended period of time. Along with Hilton and Campbell, the Colts also lost Devin Funchess for the entire season back in Week 1.

With their wide receivers dropping like flies, the Colts will trot out a wide receiver group that includes Zach Pascal, Chester Rogers, and Deon Cain. Yes, those guys have done a formidable job when their numbers have been called upon.

But while the wide receiver position is thinned out, Indianapolis has a versatile weapon in Ebron. At 6-foot-4, 250 pounds, Ebron is more than capable of being a go-to option in the passing game.

Just look back to last year in his first year with the Colts and you can see the damage he can do in Frank Reich's offense. The former Detroit Lions tight had a career-year in 2018 with 66 receptions for 750 yards and 13 touchdowns.

On top of all of that, the Colts also allowed Ebron to take a handoff for his second career rushing touchdown. That goes to show just how versatile Ebron can be in Indianapolis' offense.

This season, Ebron has seen his role in the offense diminish with Jacoby Brissett as his quarterback. The athletic tight end has totaled only 18 receptions for 248 yards and three touchdowns. Again, with the team desperate for playmakers on offense, Eric Ebron is available to use more often.

Along with the wide receiver situation, the Colts are also still in the race for the AFC South. With a respectable 5-3 record, Indianapolis is only half a game behind the Houston Texans for the division lead.

Luckily for the Colts, their next opponent is the Miami Dolphins; who are coming off of their first win of the season. Despite the shortage of offensive weapons for the Colts, they should be able to handle the Dolphins.

But in the following weeks after Week 10, it would be wise for Reich and the Colts to instill more plays that utilize their pass-catching tight end. Especially considering that Brissett could also miss time with a knee injury.

While Hilton continues to recover from his calf injury, a healthy dose of Eric Ebron could help replace his missing production. We will have to see on Sunday whether or not the Colts share the same sentiment.
