This past season the Kansas City Chiefs shocked the entire league with their success. Last offseason, they moved on from veteran quarterback Alex Smith. Smith had been with the team for over five years. Moving on from his services marked a new era in the Chiefs organization.

Instead, the team came into the season with something to prove. They went 12-4 on the season and finished first overall in the AFC West division.

Their second-year quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, proved himself to be one of the best talents in the entire NFL. He ended up winning the league MVP. Mahomes threw for 5,097 yards with 50 touchdowns and only 12 interceptions. His completion percentage sat at 66.0 percent. He also led the NFL in quarterback rating with an 82.0 overall output.

Their offense ranked first overall in the entire league. They averaged 35.3 points per game under head coach Andy Reid. Their defense was a bit suspect, allowing 26.3 points per game.

Unfortunately, they were knocked out in the AFC championship game by the New England Patriots, who wound up winning yet another Super Bowl.

The Chiefs have a lot of work to do in the coming seasons. They have one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. If he doesn't have the pieces surrounding him that he needs, they'll be wasting time.

He lost Kareem Hunt at running back to due to his off-field issues and his best weapons were his tight end, Travis Kelce, alongside wide receiver Tyreek Hill. For the Chiefs to truly become an offensive juggernaut, they need to add someone at halfback who can truly open up their offense.

Former Atlanta Falcon Tevin Coleman is a free agent on the market that is not only cost-effective, but that fits perfectly into their system. The 25-year-old is a player who doesn't have huge numbers or a lot of starts throughout his career, but might receive an impressive contract from a team looking to sign him for a lead running back role.

Last season for the Falcons, Coleman ran for 800 yards with four touchdowns. He also ran for 4.8 yards per carry. He had 32 receptions with 276 total yards receiving and five total touchdowns out of the backfield. This was his first year as the starter for the Falcons. Previously, Devonta Freeman had been the lead back for the team.

Coleman is an excellent receiver out of the backfield. This would add depth to head coach Andy Reid's offensive scheme. If he was able to get more of a volume of touches in the backfield, he could become even more effective. He's always been in the shadow of another running back. Setting him free in an offensive system that fits his play-style makes too much sense.

For the Chiefs to finally reach the Super Bowl, their offense needs to hit yet another level. Elite defenses can cause elite offenses to crumble. The team is one piece away from finally solidifying their overall offense.

Though their defense needs work as well, adding a pass-catching running back is a necessity moving forward.
