Most people believe the quarterback position is the most difficult position to play in football. After that, there has been a long-going argument on what position is the second-hardest to play. To some, cornerback is the second-most difficult position to play in the NFL.

Playing cornerback can be tough as the NFL is continually making rules that benefit wide receivers and the offense. The league is scoring at a rapid rate while cornerbacks have to find ways to slow down opposing offenses.

Having a talented cornerback duo in the NFL can prove to be very beneficial to an overall defense. Ask the New England Patriots. The Patriots cornerbacks were key to New England's ability to slowing down the Los Angeles Rams passing attack.

The Patriots shocked the world by holding the Rams' high-powered offense to just a mere three points in Super Bowl 53.

So who are the league's best cornerback tandems?

3. Marlon Humphrey/Brandon Carr

The Baltimore Ravens will have a new-look defense in 2019 but will have their two starting cornerbacks in 2018 return this season. Among their cornerbacks, Marlon Humphrey is becoming a superstar cornerback rather quickly in the NFL.

In just two seasons, Humphrey has shown his potential to be a shutdown cornerback in the Ravens defense. Humphrey has totaled four interceptions, 61 solo tackles, and 26 pass deflections in his first two seasons.

What's really impressive about Humphrey, is his ability to make plays in the “clutch” moments of games. According to PFF, Humphrey had a 92.4 clutch grade in 2018. In one-score games in the fourth quarter, Baltimore can rely on Humphrey to step up.

On the other side, Brandon Carr is an underrated cornerback in the NFL. Carr joined the Ravens in 2017 and has become one of the best cover corners in the NFL.

In the last two seasons, Carr has tallied six interceptions, 23 deflections, and 89 solo tackles.

If Humphrey keeps ascending into stardom, the Ravens could boast the best cornerback tandem in 2020.

2. Stephon Gilmore/Jason McCourty

The New England Patriots will rarely bring out their checkbook and give players a hefty contract. So when they gave Stephon Gilmore a five-year, $65 million deal, you knew he was special.

Gilmore signed with the Patriots in 2017 and has been one of the league's premier cornerbacks. Even when Gilmore played for the Buffalo Bills he was talented but in New England, his game has gone to another level.

Last season, Gilmore forced an incompletion rate of 27% in 2018—which was first in the NFL among cornerbacks. Gilmore was also vital to the Patriots ability to shut down the Los Angeles Rams offense in Super Bowl 53.

Although, Gilmore wasn't the only cornerback who balled out in 2018. Jason McCourty signed with the Patriots before the 2018 season to play alongside his brother Devin McCourty.

You can use either McCourty or J.C. Jackson alongside Gilmore and they would be one of the best tandems in the NFL.

In McCourty's first season in New England, he received a grade of an 83.1 according to PFF.

1. Jalen Ramsey/A.J. Bouye

Jalen Ramsey, Jaguars

Some people may no longer have Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye as their top cornerback tandem in the NFL. But not this guy. Ramsey is still the best cornerback in the NFL and Bouye isn't bad himself.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have struggled to have success with Blake Bortles as their quarterback. As a result, their defense was on the field a lot—causing them to slightly decline in 2018.

With Nick Foles being added to the roster, Ramsey and Bouye could return to their dominant forms once again in 2019. Even in a “down year” for Ramsey, the All-Pro cornerback had three interceptions and 13 deflections.

As a duo, Ramsey and Bouye were still elite in 2018, allowing just two touchdowns combined.

In 2019, Ramsey and Bouye are ready to show why they are still the league's most formidable cornerback tandem in the NFL.
