Born Mark William Calaway in Houston, Texas where he attended high school at Waltrip High School and was a member of their football and basketball teams. He then graduated high school in 1983 and began attending Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas, on a basketball scholarship.

In 1985, he enrolled in Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth, Texas, where he majored in sport management and played as a center for the Texas Wesleyan Rams during the 1985-1986 season. Calaway eventually dropped out of the university to focus on a career in sports and considered playing basketball professionally in Europe before deciding to pursue professional wrestling.

Mark Calaway began training under Buzz Sawyer, whom he hated due to a lack of commitment and provided limited education. He then began performing under the name Texas Red, and he made his debut on June 26, 1987, at World Class Championship Wrestling.

In 1989, Calaway joined World Championship Wrestling under the ring name “Mean Mark” Callous, who was sold as a morbid character that wore predominantly black. He made his debut on January 3, 1990, as part of the tag team The Skyscrapers.

WWF executive Bruce Prichard encouraged Vince McMahon to speak with Mark Calaway when the WCW traveled to New Jersey. Their meeting went well and Mark gave his notice to the WCW. His final match with the promotion was on September 7.

In October 1990, he signed with the World Wrestling Federation under the ring name Kane the Undertaker. He made his on-camera debut at Survivor Series as part of Ted DiBiase’s Million Dollar Team. He was then referred to as The Undertaker, dropping the Kane name and it was given several years later to his in-story younger brother.

The Undertaker eventually had his first feud in the WWF against “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka. He made his Wrestlemania debut on Wrestlemania VII where he easily defeated Snuka. He then became the youngest WWF Champion in history after he defeated Hulk Hogan at Survivor Series.

At Royal Rumble in January 1994, The Undertaker was defeated in a casket match by Yokozuna for the WWF Championship. A video then appeared coming from inside the casket representing his spirit and that he would return. He was then out for seven months after his loss. But, in reality, he was just given time off to allow him to heal from a back injury.

After several months, Ted DiBiase introduced an Undertaker played by Brian Lee. He was an impostor and was dubbed “The Underfaker” by the fans. This led to the return of the real Undertake on Summerslam, appearing as a new version with his famous Deadman persona which allowed him to have blue fog and chilling energy and music during his entrances and appearances.

The Undertaker started a feud with Mankind in 1996. The rivalry intensified as they began taking their fights into the crowd, backstage areas, and boiler rooms of different arenas. This led to the first-ever Boiler Room Brawl scheduled for SummerSlam. They brawled for 20 minutes in the Cleveland Gund Arena boiler room.

Their rivalry was leveled up to another level yet again when both wrestlers faced each other in a Buried Alive Match in the main event of In Your House 11: Buried Alive. The Undertaker won when he choked slam Mankind into the open grave, but interference from other heels led Mankind to escape the grave and they shoveled dirt onto The Undertaker, resulting in him being “buried alive”.

In May 1997, Paul Bearer accused The Undertake of burning down the family funeral home, killing his parents and his younger half-brother in the process. Undertaker denied this, but Bearer had proof in the form of his half-brother Kane.

The two fought each other at Wrestlemania XIV where The Undertaker won. They had a rematch at Unforgiven: In Your House, the first-ever Inferno match, and Undertaker won once again after setting Kane’s right arm on fire.

In one of the most famous matches in WWE history, The Undertaker faced Mankind in a Hell in a Cell match. He threw Mankind off the roof of the cell, which was 16 feet, onto a broadcast table. Afterwards, he chokeslammed Mankind through the roof of the cell which legitimately knocked him unconscious. The Undertaker finally won the match after he performed a Tombstone Piledriver on Mankind.

The Undertaker eventually adapted new personas as he went by the American Bad Ass and Big Evil before making a return to the Deadman persona. During this time, he has kept his Wrestlemania winning streak alive, until Wrestlemania XXX.

He faced Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania XXX and the match went on for 25 minutes. Lesnar managed to perform three F-5’s, his finishing move, before pinning Undertaker and breaking his 21-Wrestlemania win streak. The match was dubbed as “the most shocking result in WWE history”.

In the 2020 version of Survivor Series, the event where the Undertaker made his WWE debut, he announced his retirement from professional wrestling.

Aside from his professional wrestling career, The Undertaker also invests in real estate with his business partner Scott Everhart. In 2007, they finished the construction of a $2.7 million building in Loveland, Colorado, called “The Calahart”.

He also established the Zeus Compton Calaway Save the Animals Fund at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences with his ex-wife to help pay for lifesaving treatments for large-breed dogs.

With all that being said, it is with certainty that The Undertaker has left his legacy in professional wrestling, a career that he had for 30 years. His influence will forever be marked to his colleagues and future, aspiring professional wrestlers. Nonetheless, were you at all stunned by The Undertaker’s net worth in 2021?
