If there’s one feel-good story in this very perplexing NBA season, it’s the New York Knicks. They were barely considered a playoff team coming into the season let alone a top-four team in the Eastern Conference. The Knicks have been absolutely special this season, thanks to the rise of all-star Julius Randle and the culture inspired by Tom Thibodeau.

Aside from Randle, a player that fits so well in Thibodeau’s system is Derrick Rose. It’s no surprise given that both Thibodeau and Rose have worked together three times in three different teams specifically for the Chicago Bulls, Minnesota Timberwolves, and now with the Knicks. Rose isn't shy to admit how much Thibodeau means to him and even described their relationship as the “odd couple.”

“The synergy we've got, I can't explain it,” Rose said. “We're an odd couple, but for some reason, we understand the game. And the closest thing I probably can say is we're students of the game. We watch the game. We try to understand the game more and try to get better if not every day, every week, every month, every couple of months, every year,” said Rose as reported by ESPN’s Tim Bontemps.

“There's always room for improvement, and it's for the betterment of the team. Wherever I go, wherever he goes, we're always trying to win,” Rose added.

True enough, Thibodeau is probably the best coach Rose has worked with. He knows how to unleash the best out of the former MVP. Rose has become the x-factor in this current Knicks team, averaging 14.3 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. While it’s true that the Knicks go as far as Randle goes, Rose can somewhat alter this because when he gets going, the Knicks are even more dangerous.

Take the latest Knicks game as an example. Randle and the crew visited Los Angeles for a date with the Clippers, which they impressively won by six points. Randle only had 14 points, which is quite low given that he averages 24.1 points a game this season. The reason why the Knicks were rolling was because of Rose, who had 25 points, eight assists, and six rebounds. Rose no longer provides these numbers every night but when he does, the Knicks might just be favored to win every game.

The reason why Rose’s production is important for the Knicks moving forward is simply that he provides another dynamic for the team. Take a look at the picture captured by Rob Perez above. This is the defense Randle is most probably going to face in the playoffs hence why it’ll be helpful for the all-star to rely on another scorer. A scorer who can also be a threat on the opponent’s defense which is why Rose is vital.

If Rose can shoot the three consistently, drive in and score, or even find the open man then the Knicks will be very difficult to beat. Their team is all about grit, defense, and determination. The Knicks are hungry for success and they might just have the right pieces for success in the playoffs.
