There's a new world record for the most expensive video game ever sold. Earlier this month, an unopened copy of Super Mario Bros. sold for 2 million USD on the collectibles website Rally. Gamers with vintage copies of classic games might want to revisit their collections. Who knows, you might have something worth a million dollars sitting in your attic.

The most expensive game ever sold: Super Mario Brothers (1985)

The new most expensive game ever sold, Super Mario Bros., originally released in 1985 for the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Interestingly, this was the third time the record for the most expensive video game was broken in the span of a few weeks. The previous record-holder was a sealed copy of Super Mario 64, which originally released in 1996. It sold at auction for $1.5 million. Two days before that, the record was set by a copy of an original The Legend of Zelda from 1987, which sold for $870,000.

The vintage video game collection is becoming more and more prevalent, with professional grading and classification services being more easily available. However, not just any game can be the most expensive video game ever sold. There are several factors that affect a game's value. One of these is the number of units produced for the game, and the region it released in. Of course, its condition also plays a factor. For example, whether it's still sealed, has all its manuals, and the like.

The future of collecting may look quite different from its current state. The gaming industry is moving towards more digital-only sales. However, special collector's editions are becoming increasingly common. These contain exclusive artwork, soundtracks, and other merchandise. Some of them even contain elaborately crafted statues or figurines. These may fetch increasingly high prices as the years go by. In other memorabilia news, a card of basketball player Kobe Bryant fetched a $1.2 million bid earlier this year.
