The United States is already making moves to stem the impact of the coronavirus — also known as COVID-19 — on American society. The NBA made the right call to suspend all of its upcoming games after two players tested positive for the coronavirus. Oklahoma City Thunder forward Danilo Gallinari praised the league for its efforts and called for the rest of the country to keep their vigilance up.

The Italian forward talked about the seriousness of the situation to The New York Times' Marc Stein. He said that Americans should be more careful with their approach to the virus if they don't want to end up in a situation as dire as Italy's.

The Thunder forward told a cautionary tale how he and fellow Italians didn't take pandemic seriously and now ended up being the second-worst affected country in the world behind China. He said that everyone must take the virus seriously if they want to make it out of this situation with as little damage as possible.

“It was a mistake that we did as Italian citizens, and I put myself in, too, because I’m Italian even if I live in the States,” Gallinari said. “Of course we did a mistake not taking it seriously in Italy and now we are the second- or third-worst country in the world for this virus. Hopefully we’re not going to make the same mistake in the States.”

It pays for Americans to listen to Gallinari's words because he has family and friends who are living in terrible conditions in his home nation. He clearly doesn't wish for that to happen in the United States, and the people should be just as careful and be proactive in preventing the disease from spreading even further.
