Oklahoma City Thunder big man Mike Muscala is looking forward to playing with point guard Dennis Schroder again.

Muscala and Schroder were teammates on the Atlanta Hawks for five seasons. Muscala says Schroder is his “closest friend” in the NBA.

“I mean, he’s the closest friend I have in the NBA, for sure,” Muscala told Brett Dawson of The Athletic. “We got drafted in the same year, and then I went to Spain. So I worked as hard as I could and then eventually came back, joined him on the Hawks, and then we played together for four and a half years. Then we were part of the same trade where he came here and I went to Philly. We kept in touch last year throughout the year. I went over to his house when I was on the Lakers, and we played against the Thunder here.

“I think the nature of the NBA — the fact that your teammates can change so much and the fact that he and I did play together for almost five years — is what brought us so close. Because we just know each other quite well as far as NBA teammates go. He tells it like it is, and I really appreciate that about him. He’s a really caring guy. Just got married. Has a son now. He’s a really good friend to his friends and a really good teammate, and he plays really hard. He’s always got a chip on his shoulder. And I enjoy playing with him in that sense because he just comes ready to play every game.”

It's a new era for the Thunder, as stars Russell Westbrook and Paul George are gone. For OKC to make the postseason in 2019-20, it will need every single player on the roster to play at a high level.

The Thunder will ask Mike Muscala to stretch the floor with his outside shooting. Dennis Schroder will have his usual role with the Thunder, leading the bench in scoring.

Muscala has career averages of 5.7 points and 3.3 rebounds on 46.8 percent shooting. Meanwhile, Schroder is averaging 13.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 4.6 assists on 43.0 percent shooting in his six-year NBA career so far.
