After an overachieving campaign in the 2019-2020 NBA season, the Oklahoma City Thunder eventually parted with former head coach Billy Donovan who packed his bags on the way to Chicago. After nearly two months, the front office seemed to have found their new guy as they recently promoted former assistant coach Mark Daigneault to become the new head coach of the Thunder next season, as per ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The 35-year-tactician previously served as the head coach of the franchise's G League affiliate team in the OKC Blue for five seasons. In his stint with the developmental squad, he was able to garner a 143-107 overall record with four playoff appearances. He was also able to help eight players be called up to NBA rosters, including four players signed to two-way deals, in the past season.

He will have big shoes to fill as Donovan was able to bring a doubted squad to reach the playoffs as the fifth-seeded team that finished with a 44-28 record. Their promising run was only ended with a Game 7 loss to the Houston Rockets in the opening-round series.

Despite the challenges, Daigneault will still inherit a promising roster headlined by Steven Adams, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Lu Dort, and Darius Bazley among other players on the team. The Thunder also has a plethora of valuable assets to work with, armed with a possibility of 15 first-round picks and four sets of pick swaps between the 2020 and 2026 NBA drafts.

The newly-hired tactician will only have a short time to get acquainted with his team as training camps will commence on Dec. 1 followed by opening night slated on Dec. 22. Mark Daigneault will look to lead the Thunder to greater heights with him at the helm moving forward.

Naturally, given the circumstances — taking two months to hire within — has resulted in some fans, Thunder or not, to go to social media to simply giggle at the Mark Daigneault hiring.

Obviously, as you can tell, most Thunder fans seem confused as to who Mark Daigneault happens to be. As it always is, though, only time will tell how this hiring works out.
