The Oklahoma City Thunder are patiently awaiting the return of superstar Russell Westbrook. The dynamic point guard has struggled with injuries for most of the young 2018-19 season. He has only played in seven of the team's 14 games, but the Thunder still have a solid 9-5 record.

Head coach Billy Donovan's prayers for Westbrook's return from an ankle injury could be answered sooner rather than later. Brett Dawson of The Athletic writes:

Russell Westbrook participated in practice today, Billy Donovan says, including part of the contact portions. Nothing definitive on his status for Phoenix tomorrow.

It's still unclear whether or not Westbrook will suit up for Oklahoma City's game against the Suns on Saturday, but the fact that he's participating in contact portions of practice is a good sign.

Truthfully, it may be smart for Donovan to hold Westbrook back for one more game just to be sure he's 100 percent ready. The Suns are one of the worst teams in the league, so the Thunder should have no problem dispatching Phoenix. Of course, anyone can beat anyone on any given night, but the Thunder are winners of four of their last five (all without Westbrook).

The former MVP is nearing a return, but it may be best to give him one more weekend of rest. You can be sure that Russell Westbrook is itching to get back on the court, but it's important to prioritize long-term goals over short-term gains. Regardless, Westbrook's eventual return will bring a huge lift to a team that is already cruising.
