Bryson DeChambeau evoked prime Tiger Woods with his performance on Sunday to close out a victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill.

Turns out, Bryson DeChambeau was partially inspired by a text exchange he shared with Woods the morning before he took home the red cardigan at the event once hosted by another golfing legend — an event that Woods has won eight times.

In windy conditions, Bryson DeChambeau fended off veteran Lee Westwood and the rest of the field with an impressive one-under 71, capped off by a gusty six-foot par putt on the 18th hole to seal his first win of 2021 — and his first PGA Tour title since the U.S. Open last fall.

He finished at 11-under par for the tournament, besting Westwood (-10) by a stroke.

Afterwards, DeChambeau revealed that he received a boost of encouragement from Woods, who is currently recovering from serious leg injuries at a Los Angeles hospital following his one-vehicle wreck on Feb. 23.

“When I got that text, I’m like, wow, that’s pretty amazing that he is thinking of me when he’s in his tough times that he’s going through right now,” Bryson DeChambeau said, via GolfWeek. “So I just texted him, I said, ‘Keep moving forward, keep going forward. You’re going to get through it. You’re the hardest working person I’ve ever met and you’ll persevere through this pretty much.’ One of the things that we talked about was, it’s not about how many times you get kicked to the curb or knocked down. It’s about how many times you can get back up and keep moving forward.”

Bryson DeChambeau detailed how Woods' history of overcoming adversity — on the course and off — was in his mind as he battled through a challenging Sunday at Bay Hill.

“One of the things that stuck in my mind was Tiger and how he kept fighting. A lot of the conditions were similar to the U.S. Open and that helped me. Even when I don’t have all the things I need to feel comfortable with my golf swing and with equipment, I was still able to perform and execute when the time came. And that was pretty exciting. … I’ll remember persevering through a very difficult day where I didn’t have my best golf swing out there.”

Bryson DeChambeau revered Palmer, too, and didn't hold back when discussing the importance of winning The King's invitational.

“This red cardigan is not only for Mr. Palmer, but I would say it’s a little bit for Tiger as well, knowing hat place he’s in right now,” DeChambeau said.

DeChambeau may have won the weekend even had he not earned the cardigan. On Saturday and Sunday, he sent Bay Hill and #GolfTwitter into a frenzy by carrying the green on the 550-yard Par 5 sixth hole. After taking the traditional route on Thursday and Friday, Bryson DeChambeau uncorked two gigantic 370+ yard drives over the water and near the green.

The PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass begins on Thursday.
