The Detroit Tigers entered the 2022 campaign with lofty expectations. The AL Central was projected to be a rather weak division and Detroit made a number of offseason acquisitions. Javier Baez and Eduardo Rodriguez highlighted the Tigers transactions which had fans dreaming of a return to the playoffs. But the Tigers currently place just one game ahead of the Kansas City Royals for fourth place in the AL Central. And their struggles have stemmed from an incredibly putrid offensive performance.

According to a Ken Rosenthal written article in the Athletic, Detroit's 2.88 runs per game is the fewest by any MLB team since the 1968 Chicago White Sox. Rosenthal put that statistic into perspective in the article.

The Tigers are averaging 2.88 runs per game, the fewest by any team since the 1968 White Sox. That’s right, every team for nearly 5 1/2 decades outscored the current Tigers, including those in the NL that had pitchers hitting until last season.

Yikes. It's one thing to endure a slump, but it's a whole different issue to struggle like Detroit has.

Javier Baez, Spencer Torkelson, and Riley Green were expected to carry this Tigers lineup. But that obviously has not been the case.

Baez has been especially disappointing. Although he has swung the bat better in recent weeks, he has still been amongst MLB's worst hitters in 2022. The infielder is slashing just .209/.250/.349. His wild approach at the plate has led to an extremely frustrating performance.

Baez and the Tigers will need to turn things around if they want to avoid entering the record books as one of the worst offensive teams of all-time.
