MLB Opening Day is officially underway on Thursday. Baseball fans already have the first homer of the 2021 season, as well. Detroit Tigers slugger and future Hall of Famer Miguel Cabrera hit an opposite-field shot against Cleveland Indians ace and reigning American League Cy Young Award-winner Shane Bieber. Only, he didn't realize it at first.

See, this is April in Detroit. Anything can happen. In this case, that anything is snow at Comerica Park. The flurries were coming down so fast and furious, the Tigers veteran did not know the ball had left the yard. Cabrera humorously slid into second base, making for quite the early highlight:

The homer also offered quite the stark contrast for Bieber, as he allowed more runs and the same amount of hits in the first inning as he did in the first inning in all of his 2020 starts:

A wild and wacky start, indeed!

Back to Cabrera. The Tigers slugger is no longer the same hitter he once was in the middle of the 2010s. The two-time AL MVP and former Triple Crown winner has posted a sub-.750 OPS in three of the last four seasons, including a .250/.329/.417 slash line in 2020.

But the soon-to-be 38-year-old will still be a player to watch throughout the 2021 season.

Cabrera is now just 12 home runs shy of joining the 500 club. He is also just over 130 hits from the 3,000 club. Only six other players are currently in the 500-homer, 3,000-hit group, including the late Hank Aaron as well as Willie Mays, Eddie Murray, Alex Rodriguez, Albert Pujols and Rafael Palmeiro.

As for the Tigers, they're looking to improve after finishing in last place each of the last two seasons.
