The Detroit Tigers are in the market for a new shortstop. After talks with Carlos Correa and Marcus Semien have cooled off, the Tigers appear to be honing in on the former Chicago Cubs and New York Mets shortstop Javier Baez.

According to ESPN's Buster Olney, Baez's discussions with the Cubs brokedown amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Olney tweeted out the development, detailing the potential numbers between the Cubs and Baez. They reportedly offered him an eight-year, $168 million deal.

Reportedly Carlos Correa and Marcus Semien are looking for even more lucrative contracts. Correa had a resurgent year that put him squarely in the MVP conversation in 2021. Meanwhile, Semien is coming off a career year. He hit 45 home runs for the Toronto Blue Jays, driving in and scoring more than 100 runs.

With those two players seeking more than what Detroit is looking to spend, they have appeared to set their sights on Baez.

Baez was traded from the Cubs to the Mets midway through the 2021 season. The move helped jump start his season. He was hitting .248 for Chicago and hit .299 after the deal.

Baez was an integral part of the Chicago Cubs breaking their curse and winning the 2016 World Series.

The Tigers have been in need of a shortstop for quite a while. But they are especially needy at the position currently. Their depth chart lists Willi Castro and Zack Short as their options. Neither have much experience in the big leagues. The Tigers have been one of the worst offenses in baseball in recent years. Adding a bat like Baez could be the first step in turning that around.
