Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards will have to wait to capitalize on momentum forged from the best shooting game of his young career.

The No. 1 overall pick of the 2020 draft has entered the league's COVID protocols and will miss tonight's nationally-televised matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers, his team announced on Friday morning. Backup wing Taurean Prince has joined Edwards on the list of Minnesota players in health-and-safety protocols.

Edwards exploded for 38 points and a career-high 10 three-pointers in the Wolves' win over the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday, his second-highest scoring output of 2021-22. He's averaging 22.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists on slightly-below average 54.6% true shooting this season, all improvements compared to his NBA debut a year ago.

Prince, acquired by Minnesota in the August trade that sent Ricky Rubio to the Cleveland Cavaliers, has struggled off the bench this season, averaging 4.6 points and 2.1 rebounds in 15.4 minutes per game, shooting 36.6% overall 30.9% from three.

Edwards and Prince are just the latest players to be added to a rapidly-growing group league-wide who have either tested positive for COVID-19 or been a close contact of someone who's contracted the virus. The Chicago Bulls, in the midst of an outbreak that's ravaged their roster, have had their last two games postponed due to COVID complications, the first instance of games being cancelled this season.

The Lakers will be without Russell Westbrook and Avery Bradley on Friday after both entered into health-and-safety protocols. Los Angeles and Minnesota tipoff from Target Center on Friday at 7:00 p.m. (PST).
