Expect Jimmy Butler’s extension talks with the Minnesota Timberwolves to intensify sooner or later, as the talented shooting guard only has a year left on his current contract before becoming a free agent in the summer of 2019. The Timberwolves likely prefer Butler to remain in the Twin City beyond 2019, but an early – and trivial – sign does not sound good for those hoping that the 29-year-old guard will ink an extension with the Wolves.

Here’s a screen capture of Butler liking an Instagram comment that asked him to make the San Antonio Spurs the next stop on his NBA voyage (h/t Bleacher Report).

Under no circumstances should Butler giving a social media comment a seal of approval be construed as an absolute sign that he’s going to leave Minnesota once he can, but it can also be interpreted as another manifestation of his reported frustration with the franchise and their young cornerstone Karl-Anthony Towns. It was previously reported has grown tired of his younger Minnesota teammates’ lack of passion.

Butler and the Timberwolves were among the most disappointing teams last season. Despite shoring up their lineup with the acquisitions of Butler, Jeff Teague, Jamal Crawford, and Taj Gibson, Minnesota finished just eighth in the Western Conference and was sent crashing out of the playoffs in the first round by the Houston Rockets.

Should Butler decline an extension offer from Minnesota and opt out, he will have no shortage of suitors next summer.

Last season, Butler averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.9 assists in 59 games.
