At the 2015 NBA trade deadline, Kevin Garnett returned to the Minnesota Timberwolves. A couple months later, the Timberwolves selected Karl-Anthony Towns with the first overall pick at the 2015 NBA Draft. As a result, it created a unique situation of the team's past and future.

While Garnett only played 38 games in Towns' rookie season and is now part of TNT's Inside the NBA, the 2004 Most Valuable Player still serves as his mentor according to John Meyer of The Daily Wolf:

Since retirement, Garnett has served as a consultant for the Los Angeles Clippers and Milwaukee Bucks. While there were some questions at the time as to why the Timberwolves did not hire the 15-time All-Star, it is encouraging to know he is still around for one of the league's rising stars.

After a 13-year playoff drought, the Timberwolves are primed to make their first appearance under head coach Tom Thibodeau. Along with Towns and Andrew Wiggins, Minnesota had one of the best offseasons in recent memory by trading for Jimmy Butler while signing Jeff Teague, Taj Gibson, and Jamal Crawford.

While all teams are chasing the Golden State Warriors heading into the 2017-18 NBA season, the Timberwolves are expected to be one of the defending champion's main threats in the Western Conference.
