D'Angelo Russell made his Minnesota Timberwolves debut on Monday night, and perhaps for the first time in over two months, Karl-Anthony Towns had some real fun playing on the basketball court.

Despite the 137-126 loss to the Toronto Raptors, Towns was in good spirits. The former no. 1 overall pick expressed his happiness about playing alongside one of his closest buddies:

“It was a lot of fun,” Towns said per Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic. “I think if fans were watching the game closely, you could see how much we were talking to each other and were just hyping each other up and everything.”

Though this was just their first NBA game playing as full-time Timberwolves teammates, Towns admitted that he and Russell always had good rapport with each other:

“We always had chemistry, me and D’Angelo,” Towns said. “As a team, what’s so great about us is we’re all just trying to buy into each other because we have to trust each other with all these new players and new faces and so many different systems we’ve all played in.”

“He has a lot of responsibility,” Towns said, “but through it all, he always knows I have his back and I’ll help him as much as I possibly can to take the load off of him.”

The Timberwolves lost to a streaking Raptors team, which won its 15th game in a row. Still, there were some positives to take from this game, especially on the offensive side. As expected, though, they did give up a lot on the defensive end.

Russell had a promising debut, opening his first five minutes as a Timberwolf with nine quick points. He ended up with 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 from long distance.

Towns, meanwhile, top-scored for the Timberwolves with 23 points to go along with 10 rebounds and seven assists.
