This should not come as a surprise to anyone, but Tom Thibodeau and the Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly interested in Luol Deng. The swingman was waived by the Los Angeles Lakers after he only appeared in one game for the club last season.

Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic is reporting that the Timberwolves are still interested in Deng after reporting earlier in the summer that they would be if he was ever made available. Now, he's available.

Thibodeau has a history of bringing in players he coached when he was with the Chicago Bulls. The Timberwolves traded for Jimmy Butler last summer, brought in Taj Gibson, and picked up Derrick Rose off the scrap heap after he parted ways with the Utah Jazz following a trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Deng's contract with the Lakers was ridiculous, which forced their hand. They needed to waive Deng and use the stretch provision, especially considering the fact that they are moving in a completely different direction this season and need more flexibility for next summer.

While Deng didn't work out with the Lakers and was exiled from the rotation after one game last season, he isn't completely over the hill. Of course, he wasn't worth the money that the Lakers were paying him, but he can still provide veteran experience to a team.

When Deng was with Chicago, he averaged 16.1 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. If Thibodeau thinks he can get anything close to this kind of production in Minnesota, it's likely that he'll pull the trigger on acquiring his former player.
