The Minnesota Timberwolves love Taj Gibson, so much so that the franchise tried to find a deal at the trade deadline which could send the veteran big man to a contender so he could go deep into the playoffs, according to Jon Krawczynski.

The Timberwolves were unable to find a move, though, and kept Gibson.

Gibson has earned so much respect within the organization that efforts were made at the trading deadline to find a contender that could offer him a chance to go deep into the playoffs, league sources told The Athletic. Everyone knew which way this was headed and the need the team had to pair Saric with Towns in the frontcourt. But the Wolves could not find a deal that made sense, so they held on to Gibson and now could use him as a small-ball center with the second unit during some matchups as well.

This has to be a first. Minnesota didn't want to part ways with Taj Gibson because he's no longer valuable to them, but they wanted to send Gibson to a better team since they appreciate him so much.

It speaks to the character of Gibson, who is one of the most popular players in the league.

Unless they go on a crazy run and the teams ahead of them falter, the Timberwolves are likely going to miss the playoffs this season.

Minnesota is 26-30, 12th place in the West.
