The Minnesota Timberwolves are finalizing plans to make Houston Rockets executive vice president Gersson Rosas their new president of basketball operations. Rosas has a previous relationship with Timberwolves interim head coach Ryan Saunders, but there has been nothing finalized on Saunders' future with the club, according to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.

Saunders took over for Tom Thibodeau in January after the Timberwolves fired Thibs. Minnesota went 17-25 under Saunders and missed the playoffs.

Rosas has a long-standing connection to Ryan Saunders, but there has been nothing finalized on the interim coach’s future, sources said.

Saunders, of course, is the son of the late Flip Saunders. Ryan has a lot of fans in the Timberwolves organization. The players on the team also gravitated to him this season, especially star center Karl-Anthony Towns, who said he wants to see Saunders return next season.

Minnesota went 36-46 in 2018-19. The team was never able to recover from the Jimmy Butler trade drama. Towns had another stellar statistical season, but it didn't lead to wins. Small forward Andrew Wiggins continues to show he's not worthy of the max contract he signed in the summer of 2017.

It will be interesting to see if Rosas tries to trade Wiggins this summer.
