Robert Covington watched the Minnesota Timberwolves defeat the Brooklyn Nets Monday and the swingman says he's going to be able to help his new team on the defensive end right away.

The Timberwolves acquired Robert Covington from the Philadelphia 76ers in the Jimmy Butler trade.

Regarded as one of the most underrated players in the NBA, Covington is a great 3-and-D player. He is expected to space the floor well for the Timberwolves, who don't really have any consistent 3-point shooters. With the Sixers this season, Covington was averaging 11.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 42.7 percent from the field, 39.0 percent from beyond the arc and 73.9 percent from the free-throw line.

The 27-year-old Covington is 6-foot-9 and capable of defending positions one through four. He's a high IQ player in the sense that he doesn't gamble a lot on defense. The Timberwolves are going to benefit from his presence on the floor immediately.

Entering Tuesday, Minnesota is giving up 117.4 points per game, which is 28th in the NBA. They are also last in the league in defensive rating.

Covington figures to get a lot of good looks from beyond the arc playing alongside Jeff Teague, Derrick Rose and Andrew Wiggins. All three players are strong drivers and collapse the paint on their takes to the basket.

The Timberwolves host the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday, with Covington expected to be in the lineup.
