The Minnesota Timberwolves recently hauled in the top overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft which will potentially be a key part of their rebuilding cause. While it is still uncertain if they will proceed to select a rookie or use it as a valuable trade piece instead, rumors have been swirling that the Timberwolves are eyeing a specific candidate if they chose to do the former.

Via Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman:

“Sources tell B/R that the Minnesota Timberwolves are high on Toppin. The question is whether they'd be willing to take him first overall or if they'd only draft the big man out of Dayton in a trade-down scenario.”

Regardless of what the Timberwolves would decide to do, Obi Toppin remains to be seen as a valuable asset for any team that will take a chance on him. He is a forward who has advantages on his vertical bounce, three-point shot, post-game skills, and all-around passing. His explosive style and highlight-reel plays eventually lifted him to be one of the most intriguing prospects of the 2020 Rookie Draft Class.

The Timberwolves were recently listed as the 24th team in offensive rating last season and would welcome a much-needed boost to their offensive attack by drafting the 22-year-old.

He had a breakout year in 2020 for the Dayton Flyers during his sophomore campaign where he racked up averages of 20.0 points per game, 7.5 rebounds per game, 1.2 blocks per game on 63.3% shooting from the field, and 39% from beyond the arc through 31.6 minutes of action on the floor.

The New York native also garnered significant hardware last season namely the 2020 National College Player of the Year award, 2020 Karl Malone award, 2020 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year award, a selection to the first-team All-Atlantic 10, and was also named a consensus first-team All-American.

With the 2020 NBA Draft proceedings slated on November 18, it would be interesting to see what Timberwolves general manager Scott Layden would decide to do with the top overall pick to shake up his franchise's future to trend in the right direction.
