The Minnesota Timberwolves fell way short of what was expected of them last season. Despite having a roster stacked with talent, the team finished just eighth in the Western Division and was subsequently kicked out of the playoffs by the Houston Rockets in the first round. That left the Timberwolves in a state of great unhappiness, which is only being aggravated by reports of Jimmy Butler’s frustration over his teammates’ lackadaisical ways and rumors of Karl-Anthony Towns’ resentment towards head coach Tom Thibodeau.

But Minnesota’s fears of Anthony leaving the team next year as a free agent has been allayed by a report by Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic that says the big man is likely to sign an extension deal with the Timberwolves.

Everyone in the organization expects Towns to sign the extension. No rookie has passed up this much money before and Towns doesn’t figure to be the first. While he has not provided specifics on what he wants to discuss, one would think Tom Thibodeau’s decision to fire Legarza, a close confidante of KAT’s during his first three NBA seasons, would probably be on that list.

Nothing is set in stone yet with regards to Karl-Anthony Towns’ stay in Minnesota, but this is positive news for the Timberwolves. Towns is qualified to sign a five-year extension worth $188 million with the Timberwolves. The price tag isn’t cheap for a Towns extension, but by prolonging their partnership with the former Kentucky Wildcats, the Timberwolves would be securing themselves of one of the best young big men in the game today for years to come.

It’s still up to Towns, though, as he is set to become a restricted free agent in the summer of 2019.
