The Tennessee Titans recently announced the release of wide receiver Rishard Matthews at his very own requestion. General manager Jon Robinson has now provided a bit more clarity on the whole situation.

Matthews kicked things off with a cryptic post on Instagram. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, Robinson says the Titans attempted to trade him before his release:

Titans GM Jon Robinson says at a press conference on WR Rishard Matthews was frustrated with his role in the offense. “He reached out Monday and asked to be released or traded. We explored the trade options but that market never manifested itself.”

Robinson added that he wished Matthews would have remained with the Titans.

Titans GM Jon Robinson was asked if WR Rishard Matthews quit on the team. He simply says he thought Matthews could help the team, but Matthews wanted to move on.

It goes without saying that the whole situation is rather strange. The Titans signed Matthews to a one-year extension in the offseason. However, he was forced to miss most of training camp with a lingering knee injury. As a result, he seemingly lost his spot as the team's top wideout.

Matthews had been somewhat vocal about his diminished role when the 2018 NFL season started. Despite his optimism that he would receive more looks, they never came in this struggling Titans offense. Furthermore, wide receivers Corey Davis and Taywan Taylor have done their part to secure the starting jobs.

Matthews got his wish to be released from Tennessee, but it remains to be seen how long it will take for him to get picked up by someone else.
