Through the first eight weeks of the NFL season, the Tennessee Titans have the best record in the entire AFC. But their place atop the Super Bowl contenders list feels like a mirage now after the latest injury news on Derrick Henry.

The best running back in the NFL suffered a foot injury that required surgery in their Week 8 contest against the Indianapolis Colts. The reports on the exact timeline for his return weren't all in sync, but there were some rumblings that he would be back in time for the playoffs, with the best case scenario being a six-week stint on the sidelines.

But according to the latest report from ESPN's Adam Schefter, Derrick Henry's actual chances for an early return aren't as cheery as most Titans fans were hoping.

Via ESPN:

The Titans still are keeping hope alive that Henry, the NFL's leading rusher, will be able to return at some point this season after undergoing foot surgery last week. But one source told ESPN that it “would be very surprising if he made it back this season.”

The saving grace for Tennessee is that Derrick Henry has seemingly built his entire career around overcoming doubts and shattering projections placed on him. If there's a chance he can work towards playing this season, there's no doubt that he'll put in the work to make it happen.

For now, the Titans will be relying on another all-time running back in Adrian Peterson to fill the void. All they can do now is try and stay afloat in the playoff picture and hope Derrick Henry miraculously makes his way back.
