Tennessee Titans kicker Stephen Gostkowski was one of the most accurate kickers in the sport for 14 years with New England Patriots, but his first game for his new squad got off to a disastrous start — and it could have been much, much worse.

Gostkowski missed three field goal attempts and an extra point before hitting a 25-yard field goal with 17 seconds left to give Tennessee a 16-14 victory over the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football.

“I just got here, and I come out here and play like that,” Gostkowski said afterwards. “For the guys to still support me and still have my back was pretty cool…That's why I was grateful for the opportunity at the end — 'cause the guys deserve to win.”

For now, the Titans are sticking with Gostkowski rather than signing a new kicker. Head coach Mike Vrabel is looking for improvement across the board, and he's confident that his veteran kicker will remedy his current issues.

“For a guy that’s a career 87 percent field goal kicker, I think a lot of those corrections are going to be on him,” Mike Vrabel said Monday, via Erik Bacharach of the Tennessean. “But it’s also on us to make everything around him better.”

The Titans followed up their run to the AFC Championship last season with a subpar opening night performance. Besides Gostkowski's woes, Tennessee was unable to get their potent rushing attack going, and benefited from some head-scratching clock management from Broncos head coach Vic Fangio late in the fourth quarter.

Gostkowski appreciated his coach and former Patriots teammate sticking with him on Monday and allowing him to attempt the final kick. One can bet he's grateful to have Vrabel's continued faith going forward, too.

“You don't always get that lucky to get a chance to redeem yourself,” Gostkowski said. “I'm disappointed in myself and embarrassed and frustrated, but at the end of the day, we won.”

Tennessee signed Gostkowski to a one-year, $2.75 million deal after releasing kicker Greg Joseph 11 days before Week 1.

Entering Monday, Gostkowski had never missed three field goals a game. Dating back to last season, he's missed an extra point attempt in four consecutive games.

Gostkowski and the Titans will attempt to right the ship against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
