Jonnu Smith stepped up for the Tennessee Titans in 2019, and he's prepared to see an increased role in 2020. Despite the unusual circumstances of the offseason, Smith is working out with quarterback Ryan Tannehill on a weekly basis.

In a Zoom conference call on Wednesday, Smith spoke to Jim Wyatt of the team's official site about his offseason workouts with Tannehill:

“It’s been very helpful, just building the chemistry and taking advantage of being in the same location,” Smith said. “We’re just trying to get ahead and continuing to work on our craft so we can improve any way we can. It’s been great we’ve been able to get that work in, and I’m sure it will put us in a good position during the season.”

Last season, in Smith's third year in the NFL, he saw an expanded role in Tennessee's offense. While veteran Delanie Walker was sidelined for nine games, Smith hauled in a career-high 35 passes for 439 yards and three touchdowns.

On the other hand, he also contributed six receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown in the postseason. Once the Titans were eliminated from the playoffs, Smith set his sights on improving for next season.

Prior to free agency this offseason, the Titans released Walker after seven seasons with the franchise. As a result of his departure, Smith is poised to be Tennessee's No. 1 tight end going into next season.

With more responsibility in the offense, Smith wants to build more chemistry with Tannehill. By meeting weekly this offseason, Smith and Tannehill hope that translates to a better rapport on the field in 2020.
