The Tennessee Titans were unable to come to a long-term agreement with running back Derrick Henry this offseason, resulting in them placing the franchise tag on him for the 2020 NFL season. With the deadline approaching before the $10.278 million tag becomes set in stone, there is still some speculation regarding any potential headway being made.

According to Terry McCormick of TitanInsider.com, the Titans have kept discussions open with Henry for a deal to get done by July 15:

“Although no extension is on the verge of happening, there is the possibility that talks could accelerate in the final week with the deadline approaching. A move toward common ground is still possible as the sides are expected to continue discussions in an effort to put together an amenable deal for the former Heisman Trophy-winning running back.”

Although the prospect of both sides being able to hammer out a long-term contract within the week may seem far-fetched, it is imperative that they make efforts to at least get the groundwork done.

The Titans caught some flak for giving quarterback Ryan Tannehill his lucrative pay day before Henry, given the latter's role as the focal point of the offense. While paying running backs well has been deemed as somewhat of a taboo by teams in recent years, the reigning rushing champ has proven to be one of the few exceptions after finishing the 2019 campaign with 1,540 yards and 16 touchdowns.

The prolonged negotiations could very well spur Henry to up his price tag if he manages to enjoy another dominant year as the centerpiece of Tennessee's offense.
