Tennessee Titans general manager Jon Robinson has confirmed that he's negotiating a long-term deal with star running back Derrick Henry.

According to Jim Wyatt of the Titans team website, Robinson has had numerous phone calls with Henry's agent, Jimmy Sexton, over the past two weeks.

Henry, who turned 26 in January, is still very much in his prime, and it seems like the Titans are willing to pay him now. Henry signed a $10.2 million franchise tender with the Titans back in April; however, numerous reports have indicated that both sides will continue to work on a long-term deal.

After racking up 1,059 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns in 2018, Henry took his game a step further this past season. In 2019, Henry led the NFL with 1,540 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns. Additionally, he played phenomenally in the first two games of the playoffs, picking up 182 yards rushing against the New England Patriots and 195 yards rushing in the Divisional win over the Ravens.

The Alabama product has expressed that he wants to stay with the Titans for the long term. He said so in a recent interview:

“I want to stay with the Tennessee Titans … They are the ones that took a chance on me — 31 teams passed on me on the draft, and they selected me. I have a lot of love for Tennessee. I have a lot of love for everyone in that organization.”

If the two sides aren't able to agree on a deal by July 15, Henry will have to play under the franchise tag in 2020 before entering free agency, barring the Titans inking him to a contract before that happens.
