The Tennessee Titans are placing the franchise tag on stud running back Derrick Henry according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

With the new CBA in place and only one tag being available to the team, getting Ryan Tannehill to agree to an extension was key for keeping both guys around. Heading into the offseason there were questions if the team would be able to keep both together but for now, they will be together for at least one more year. According to overthecap.com, the projected franchise tag for a running back is worth $12.47 million.

The deadline to tag any player is at 11:59 PM Eastern time. Just because the franchise tag is placed doesn't mean the team can't get a long term deal done with him. The window to get a long term deal done is July 15th but if a deal isn't in place, he will play under the one year deal and then be a free agent next season.

“If you can’t work (a long-term contract with a player) out, I won’t say (a tag) is a bad thing; I don’t know if it’s a good thing,” Titans general manager Jon Robinson said at the NFL Scouting Combine on Feb. 25. “It’s just a resource that we have to use. But we’ve got a lot of good players. We want to try to keep as many good players on our team as possible, and we’ll see how it goes.”

Derrick Henry finished the 2019 season rushing for 1,540 yards and 16 touchdowns. If the Titans are going to have another big 2020 season, Henry is going to be key.
